Il Teatro del Silenzio
The Teatro del Silenzio is an open-air amphitheater created by taking advantage of the natural shape of a hill near the town of Lajatico, in the province of Pisa.
The structure, inaugurated on July 27, 2006, was built at the request of the world-renowned singer Andrea Bocelli, who was born in this village.
According to the original idea, the venue was designed to be assembled and host only one performance per year (hence the name “Theatre of Silence”).
The construction consists of a circular stage several meters in radius, at the center of which stands an imposing sculpture representing a human face. The sculpture was created by Polish artist Igor Mitoraj for the scenography of Manon Lescaut and was later donated by the sculptor to the theater’s foundation.
Several granite blocks have been placed behind the stage to form a scenic backdrop.
On days when no events are held, the audience area is completely dismantled, and the stage transforms into an artificial lake.
From this concept arises the definition of Teatro del Silenzio: more precisely, a place in the territory of the Municipality of Lajatico, shaped by necessary land movement interventions to simulate a natural theater, uniquely conceived in this way.
